What is the difference between coaching and consulting?

Consulting is an engagement that operates at the organizational level: I'm working for a business unit, a division, the owner, or the CEO. I may have a lot of influence about how the business operates. My mission is to solve one or more organizational issues. I work by analyzing, planning, and then implementing change. I may have a position of authority during this period. Usually, the engagement has a well-defined beginning and end. I'm frequently working with teams, not individuals.

Coaching is a one-on-one relationship. You may have hired me directly, or I may have been hired by your employer. A coaching relationship is very Socratic. I'll ask a lot of questions and the processes of answering them builds the foundation for personal and professional growth. You or your employer set the overall goals while you and I decide together the specifics of what we will cover each meeting. Unlike in a consulting engagement, we are equal partners as coach and client and we share equal responsibility in the relationship. If I've been hired by your employer to work with you I may be providing them with updates about our work together but I will keep the details about our discussions confidential(1). In a coaching relationship I'm predominantly working with individuals, not teams.

What is the difference between Executive Coaching, Business Coaching, and Life Coaching?

Not much, actually. Some people still live under the misapprehension that we can live completely separate professional and personal lives. In my experience this never happens. In order to be fully effective leaders and contributors we must be comfortable in all the facets of our lives. Things that are roadblocks to professional success are often also negatively impacting our personal lives. Drawing lines between these aspects of our lives is arbitrary and pointless.

One distinction, though, is that I exclusively begin a coaching relationship as a business coach. We may well work on many personal things along the way but the overriding purpose of the engagement is to improve your performance in a professional or business setting. If you are looking to work exclusively on personal issues, someone marketing themselves as a life coach is a better choice for you.

Where and how do we meet for coaching?

The most common method of coaching is via telephone--either landlines, cell phones, or Skype. I also do a fair amount of face-to-face coaching along the Front Range and in the mountains of Colorado. I maintain co-working facilities in Aurora and Boulder that are convenient places to meet. I also travel extensively and I am able to have occasional face-to-face meetings with clients that I normally coach over the phone.

Where do you accept consulting and coaching engagements?

My bags are always packed and my passport is always current. When it makes sense to do so, I will come to you anywhere on the globe.

How much do you charge

As a big fan of small business, I do my best to make my services available to organizations all the way down to companies of one. This necessitates a tiered pricing structure. Some people, usually the ones in the higher tier, express concern about the fairness of this. Please accept that I've developed this structure over time and through hard-earned experience. I could not coach or consult to smaller companies if I did not do this. I take great pleasure in helping my clients move up into higher fees--it means our work together is yielding results. Lastly, my highest fees are still middle-of-the-pack for what I do. I'm a good value at any price point.

Why is the hourly rate less for consulting than coaching? When consulting, all time spent working for a client is billed. When coaching, you are billed by the length of our meetings--our "contact" time together. Any time spent doing research or planning on your behalf, reviewing information about our past meetings, and my own time preparing for meetings are included in that rate. I usually spend one to two hours of outside work per contact hour when coaching.
